Becoming an Employee of the City of Lima

The City of Lima, Ohio is committed to a policy of equal opportunity and nondiscrimination for all of its employees and applicants for employment. Elected Officials

There are four ways to become a full-time or part-time employee of the City of Lima. One way is to win an election for those positions that are filled through the election process. Elected offices at the City include the Mayor, Auditor, Law Director and members of City Council.

Appointed Officials

Another way to gain employment with the City is to receive a direct appointment from an elected official. Generally, the City Charter limits the number of direct appointments that can be made by any elected official.

Civil Service Employees

The third way to gain employment with the City of Lima is through the Civil Service employee selection process. Most of the over 370 positions at the City of Lima are filled via the Civil Service process. In most cases, gaining entry-level employment with the City of Lima through the Civil Service process means that your name must appear on an eligibility list. To get on that list, an applicant must take, and pass, a Civil Service Exam administered by the Civil Service Board. Civil Service Application (PDF)

Seasonal Employees

Finally, a limited number of seasonal positions are available throughout the year, most through the summer months. By City Charter, a person working in a seasonal position is limited to 90-work days in any one calendar year. Seasonal employees do not receive benefits such as health care, vacation pay or holiday pay.

Ambassador Volunteer Program

The mission of the Lima Municial Building Ambassador Program is that of enhancing the visits of all those who enter the Lima Municipal Building by providing trained and qualified volunteers. Those volunteers support the overall experience of people who come to the Municipal Building to conduct business with the City of Lima. The mission of the Lima Municipal Building Ambassador (LMBA) Program is improved by the active participation of citizens of the community. To this end the LMBA and the City of Lima accepts and encourages the involvement of qualified volunteers.

A volunteer in the Ambassador Program is anyone who chooses to perform services for the LMBA without compensation or expectation of compensation, and, who performs a task at the direction of and on behalf of the Program. A volunteer must be officially accepted and properly trained prior to performance of the task. Volunteers are not employees of the City of Lima.
